GNASH Statement About the Closure of Southern Ice Arena

2007-11-08

This past week, the management at Southern Ice Arena announced that the facility has been sold and that it would no longer offer ice skating. The Executive Board of GNASH wishes to convey the following items of information to players, coaches and parents in the league:

1.                  Southern Ice had advised us that it will operate two sheets of ice through January 31, 2008.
2.                  Southern Ice had advised us that it will operate one sheet of ice after February 1, 2008.
3.                  We are reviewing our schedule to see if any adjustments need to be made as a result of losing one sheet of ice for the month of February 2008. Our current season ends in February 2008.
4.                  Besides the Sports Plex, the only existing opportunities for additional ice surfaces for the 2008-09 season are at the Sommet Center (where the Predators play) and the Municipal Auditorium in downtown Nashville. Representatives from the GNASH Executive Board are contacting both locations to explore possibilities for future seasons.
5.                  It is too early to estimate how GNASH could operate a 20 team league if the only ice surfaces available were at the Sports Plex. Please remember that as a result of the closing of Southern Ice, there will be a significant increased demand on the Sports Plex by ice skaters, recreational hockey leagues and travel hockey leagues, in addition to GNASH, for available ice times.

We encourage players, coaches, parents and schools to make the 2007-08 GNASH season the best ever. With our new season format, we are looking forward to exciting games every Wednesday and Friday night. Please be assured that even as this season progresses, the GNASH Executive Board is hard at working on options for the 2008-09 season.
